Hello!
My name is Ronnie Schobert, and I am the passionate high school biology teacher behind The Biology Breakout Room!
Education
In August, 2018, I graduated with my B.S. in Human Health Sciences from Oakland University. Initially intent on pursuing a career in medicine, I became involved in undergraduate medical research—a position that afforded me with the opportunity to attend and showcase my research at the 2018, Society of Behavioral Medicine Annual Conference!
To supplement income after graduation, I accepted a part-time position tutoring math to secondary students…and fell in love with teaching. Then it clicked: I could combine my interests by becoming a secondary science teacher. Soon after, I received acceptance into the University Michigan - Flint’s alternative route to teaching program, whose coursework focused heavily on equitable teaching practices that make learning accessible to ALL students. Just two short years later, I graduated with my M.A. in Secondary Education with a Concentration in Urban Education.
Experience
Having passed my certification exam early, I was able to accept a full-time position teaching high school biology during my second year of grad school. While confined to a digital classroom for most of that year due to COVID-19, I learned of many instructional strategies and technologies that continue to enhance my students’ learning.
I remained at this small, Title I charter school in South East Michigan for three more years, during which time I explored curriculum design, experimented with various teaching approaches, and examined different classroom management strategies. As I enter my fifth year of teaching, I embark on a new and exciting journey teaching biology at one of Detroit’s public high schools!
My Five to Nine
When I’m not working, you’ll likely find me with my family, doing something outdoors! Prior to kids, my husband and I enjoyed traveling and hiking; since the kids have come along, we have happily opted for trips to the park and afternoons out on the lake. With what little time I have left for myself, I enjoy indulging in a good book or TV show, or working on anything related to the interior design or refurbishment of my home—I am the queen of “pending” DIY projects.
